Our Dinner Programs
Since 1982, My Brother's Table has been a place of Big Meals and Small Miracles for those who are hungry. Although we are a soup kitchen, we also provide the “chicken soup for the soul” and other services that many of our guests require.
For example, a crew of listening volunteers regularly comes to chat with, and most importantly, listen to our guests during the evening meal. n. Some volunteers have an ongoing job at the Table and volunteer a day or more weekly to provide a specific service.
Senior Dinner Program
My Brother's Table prepares and serves meals twice a month to 100 seniors who have no transportation to our soup kitchen. These seniors are identified as at risk by Greater Lynn Senior Services. The meals are served at a local senior housing project or at GLSS headquarters.
Other Table Programs
My Brother's Table serves lunch Monday through Friday. We also provide free meals on a daily basis to the Lynn Police for individuals in jail. The Table works with local food pantries as part of the Lynn Hunger Network coordinating the distribution of turkeys on Thanksgiving, the annual National Letter Carriers Canned Food Drive, and sharing “extra” food deliveries with others in the community who are active in the war against hunger.
Meal Delivery Program
The Table provides a dinner shuttle outreach to assist guests-- and families living with them--suffering from terminal or chronic illnesses who cannot come to the dining room for dinner. In order to be eligible for the Dinner Shuttle, individuals cannot be eligible (often because they are too young) for benefits from any other agency, such as Meals on Wheels.
This program depends on volunteers who spend each Wednesday packing boxes of staples and frozen meals and delivering the boxes to the 25 individuals on the list. They often spend a few minutes chatting with the recipients and putting the food away for them. We rely both on donated and purchased food. The biggest expense for this program is the purchase of microwaveable containers for the frozen meals that we prepare ourselves.
Advocacy For Our Guests
The staff of My Brother's Table makes hundred of referrals during the year to other agencies and programs to help our guests receive necessary services. Table staff members are on the boards and committees of many of the human service organizations in the City of Lynn and the region as well. It is part of our mission to advocate for those in need by being active in the community concerning the most pressing issues for our guests such as health care and housing.
The Lynn Hunger Network, sponsored by Project Bread, meets monthly at My Brother's Table. In addition to hosting this group, the Table organizes the collection and distribution of hundreds of turkeys each Thanksgiving. We also coordinated the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Canned Food Drive which brings in 80,000 pounds of food..
The Table offers a free medical clinic on Tuesday evenings to provide care for minor health problems, blood pressure checks and referrals. The clinic is staffed by volunteers; two nurses and a physician. Clinic night is always busy. A free, confidential HIV clinic is also offered, as are flu shots, other vaccinations when available, and TB tests. Nurses from the City's health department often join clinic volunteers for testing and administration of vaccines.
Guests are sometimes eligible for other medical services, but our caring volunteer nursing staff is always there on Tuesday providing listening, comforting and caring advice in a less stressful environment than an emergency room or some medical offices. While some medical supplies are donated, we purchase Ensure, bandages, over-the-counter medications, blood sugar testing supplies, inhalers, etc.
Hunger In Lynn
Today the problems of hunger and poverty continue to exist in the city of Lynn. Today there are more hungry families in need. There is a big rise in the number of working poor as well as continued plague of homelessness.
